At Hermit Park we focus on ensuring that every child is not only achieving their learning potential but also adding value to their life experiences. Children learn best in constructive and interactive environments, where their learning is meaningful to them. Our early year’s team provides a range and balance of age-appropriate pedagogies to set our HPSS children up for success as they then move into their upper years of primary school, where they are challenged and extended in their learning.

Hermit Park SS has a long history of environmental awareness and are proud to be recognized throughout the community as a leading school in this area. We have a team of dedicated and enthusiastic teachers who guide and encourage their students into becoming sustainable citizens. Many Townsville environmental groups such as the Townsville Gardening Club, the Townsville and District Beekeepers Club, and other schools in the Townsville region have come to visit.
As you enter the school, adjacent to the school office, you will be rewarded with the delightful sights and sounds of our famous rainforest. It was established in 1994 with the year 7 students coordinating the planting of the first trees. This project was the first of many and the brainwave of our very own “Eco Warrior”, the late Mr Craig Aisthorpe.
You will discover many treasures as you wander through our grounds, such as the chicken coop, hydroponics, arid garden, windmill, the curlew habitat, native and European bees and more. The school has also been a member of the Reef Guardian Program since its beginning in 2003; promoting positive action and education to effect environmental changes for the marine ecosystem.
HPSS students are involved in each project’s conception and maintenance and are on hand to give a guided tour; we are proud to show off our many environmental achievements.
