At Hermit Park we focus on ensuring that every child is not only achieving their potential but also adding value to their learning. Children learn best in constructive and interactive environments, where the material they are learning is meaningful to them. Our early year’s team provides a range and balance of age-appropriate pedagogies to set our HPSS children up for success as they then move into their upper years of Primary school learning.

Hermit Park has always enjoyed and fostered a healthy, vibrant sporting culture and program.  As the school has grown in size so has its sporting achievements and programs.  Our participation in Friday block sport continues to increase and the school is participating in sports we have not previously competed in.  Last year the boys AFL team were crowned 2016 Townsville school champions in what was a highly competitive draw.  Students in years 4 to 6 can choose from a selection of sports to play at district gala days and may participate in district selection trials for cross-country, athletics, netball, softball, cricket, hockey and AFL. 2016 also saw our swim team promoted from 'C' schools to 'B' schools after a very dominant performance in the pool placing first in the 'C' schools carnival.

Hermit Park SS has a long history of environmental awareness and are proud to have been recognized throughout the community as a leading school in this area. We have had a team of dedicated and enthusiastic teachers who guide and encourage their students into becoming sustainable citizens. Many Townsville environmental groups such as the Townsville Gardening Club, the Townsville and District Beekeepers Club, and other schools in the Townsville region have come to visit.
As you enter the school, adjacent to the school office, you will be rewarded with the delightful sights and sounds of our famous rainforest. It was established in 1994 with the year 7 students helping the year 1 students to plant the first trees. This project was the first of many and the brainwave of our very own “environ-man”, Mr Craig Aisthorpe. Craig has also been instrumental in seeking funding, planning and implementing the many other projects you will discover as you wander through our grounds, such as the chicken coop, the Barramundi tank, the Arid garden, the salt water tank, the Aquaponics area, the windmill, the curlew habitat and many more. The school has also been a member of the Reef Guardian Program since its beginning in 2003; promoting positive action and education to effect environmental changes for the marine ecosystem.
The students are involved in each project’s conception and maintenance and are on hand to give a guided tour; proud to show off our many environmental achievements.
