Hermit Park State School opened in 1924. With a view to preserving our proud heritage, the well maintained classrooms are traditional wooden buildings with high ceilings and casement windows.
In 2010 our new library was recognised as an Education Queensland Showcase building for incorporating sustainable building techniques and traditional 'heritage-style' architecture with modern open floor plans. Extensive ITC facilities integrated in the space include 55 desktop computers, 50 laptops, 45 iPads, robotics, STEM equipment, Makey Makey kits, sound equipment, Smart TV and more.
Our fully enclosed, modern hall is used for a variety of activities including weekly school assemblies, band rehearsals, sports activities and community events such as the Easter Bonnet Parade.
Our music room has been custom built and acoustically designed to allow two teaching spaces with sound proofing, which enables both classroom music teaching and instrumental music to occur simultaneously and for the space to be opened up for extra room or small performances.
Adjacent to the hall and music room is a large turfed, shaded space utilised for a huge range of curriculum and extra curricula activities.
Hermit Park is one of the few remaining schools with a dedicated, physically separated junior campus (Prep-Year 1). This enables us to tailor the physical environment to suit our youngest students with height-appropriate playgrounds, dedicated space for exploratory play and large classrooms for the varied early years curriculum requirements.
On our main campus (Years 2-6), a combination of sustainability projects, means our large grass oval, with arborist managed 130 year old native trees, remains a green haven for outdoor play all year round. Students can also relax and play in covered areas, purpose built ninja park  and the handball and basketball courts during breaks.
Scattered throughout the school grounds are a wide range of facilities that enable us to fulfil our commitment to environmental sustainability. These include a worm farm, compost bins, solar water heating, water harvesting system, water sill filtration system, windmill, rainforest, arid garden, fruit and vegetable patch, native bush food garden, barramundi tank, aquaponics, chickens, native bees, european bees and hives, and the Aristolochia vine planted specifically for the Cairns birdwing butterfly.
