The ability of classical music to enhance cognitive development in children, particularly in relation to spatial reasoning, is well recognised.

At Hermit Park we are committed to providing students with a range of musical experiences.

Classroom music

Two specialist music teachers are employed by Hermit Park State School. Students from all year levels take part in weekly music lessons where they learn to perform, read, write and create music.  Some of elements of music covered include:

  • beat, rhythm and meter
  • pitch and melody
  • staff notation
  • part work
  • form and structure
  • expressive elements

Instrumental music program

Still in its infancy stage, Hermit Park's instrumental music program offers students from year 3 to year 6 the opportunity to learn an instrument.

The students in this program receive weekly lessons, by specialist instrumental music teachers. Upon selection to the program, a school instrument may be hired for the first twelve months of tuition with a view to either purchasing or hiring in the following years.

Strings lessons are available for selected students from year 3 to year 6. Brass, woodwind or percussion instruction is available to selected students from year 5 to year 6. Selection for the program generally occurs towards the end of year 2 and year 4 and information is sent home to parents at that time.

Performance groups

Learning to perform music as part of a larger group is a challenging and rewarding pursuit.

Hermit Park offers two choirs: junior choir for any interested students from year 3 to year 4; and senior choir for year 5 and year 6 students. The choir rehearses weekly during lunch break and performs regularly on school assembly.

Students participating in the instrumental music program are given the opportunity to participate in the band, string ensemble or a small mixed ensemble group. These groups meet before school and/or during their lunch break and perform regularly on school assembly and community events such as our Christmas carols evening.
